Distraction Osteogenesis Update: Introduction of Multidirectional Cranial Distraction Osteogenesis

Abstract: In this review, we discuss in detail our current procedure for treating craniosynostosis using multidirectional cranial distraction osteogenesis (MCDO). The MCDO method allows all phenotypes of skull deformity to be reshaped by distraction osteogenesis, except in patients who are 5 months of age or younger and patients with posterior cranial vault problems. We report the results of clinical data of 36 children with craniosynostosis who underwent MCDO between 2005 and 2014 in our institute. This method has the … Show more

“…This finding is expected to be helpful for the surgical treatment of craniosynostosis. Our findings suggest that the multidirectional cranial distraction osteogenesis method (a method targeting equal correction in each 3D direction) 25) is more physiological than single-direction bone extension in cases of multiplesuture craniosynostosis. Furthermore, this study's new 3D growth-related parameters are expected to be an important index, such as early detection when considering whether suturectomy should be performed for sagittal synostosis before 6 months of age.…”

“…This technique involves the application of graduated tension to the bone tissue using external fixation devices. The main advantage of this procedure is the reduced invasiveness in comparison with open cranial vault remodeling, since the dissection of the dura is limited [37]. However, it shows limitations such as long treatment duration and, in some cases, secondary surgical interventions.…”
