Distributed Charging Prioritization Methodology Based on Evolutionary Computation and Virtual Power Plants to Integrate Electric Vehicle Fleets on Smart Grids

Abstract: Electric vehicle fleets and smart grids are two growing technologies. These technologies have provided new possibilities to reduce pollution and increase energy efficiency. In this sense, electric vehicles are used as mobile loads in the power grid. A distributed charging prioritization methodology is proposed in this paper. The solution is based on the concept of virtual power plants and the usage of evolutionary computation algorithms. Additionally, a comparison of several evolutionary algorithms—namely gene… Show more

“…In this sense, if the expression is not yet in the database, the decomposition engine checks the dependency between variables and the number of steps necessary to calculate the result. To reduce the number of steps, the decomposition engine applies a particle swarm optimization (PSO) [16] algorithm. The objective of using a genetic algorithm is to find out an equivalent logic expression with a small number of steps, reducing the dependency between variables and operations.…”

“…In [13], a method of optimising vehicle charging mode in the VPP environment is proposed, which considers vehicle aggregate storage availability and vehicle redistribution. Then, Guerrero et al [14] based on the concept of a VPP, a charging priority scheme for electric vehicles is proposed. However, for example, in the analysis of VPP, an electric vehicle is used as the moving load in the VPP, which ignores the role of electric vehicle in reverse transmission to the grid.…”

“…In this way, a VEN could manage a system with a VTN that manages a Smart Building or a complete power grid, simplifying the downstream control and regulation of all the available resources. This concept is similar to the concept of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) [14,15], which simplifies the management of the power grid. A VPP may play a role as a VEN and VTN (at the same time, like intermediate node in Figure 2) but, in this architecture, could include only final nodes with only one role (VEN, in case of leaf nodes, and VTN, in case of root nodes).…”
