Distributed design review in virtual environments

Abstract: In large distributed corporations, distributed design review offers the potential for cost savings, reduced time to market, and improved efficiency. It also has the potential to improve the design process by enabling wider expertise to be incorporated in design reviews. This paper describes the integration of several components to enable distributed virtual design review in mixed multi-party, heterogeneous multi-site 2D and immersive 3D environments. The system provides higher layers of support for collaborati… Show more

“…Critique often occurs during a design review-a meeting where the team assesses and discusses design documents in reference to expectations, requirements, and goals (Sater-Black & Iversen, 1994 shown in Figure 2.6) and research systems (e.g., DDRIVE (Daily et al, 2000)) that support design reviews are often centered around virtual CAD models. However, not all features of a design can be fully captured or evaluated in a virtual representation.…”

“…Virtual environments have been explored for ab initio design [5], distributed design review [6] and analysis [7] of mechanical parts. The DVDS system proposed by Arangarasan and Gadh [5] discusses intuitive interaction techniques in an immersive environment including hand motions, gestures and voice commands for ab initio CAD design.…”

The DDRIVE system of Daily et al [6] utilizes a virtual environment for multi-party distributed design review. A virtual environment for interactive simulation and analysis has been developed by Yeh et al [7].…”

“…Daily et al (2000) describe how industrial designers working in distributive environments benefit from cost savings and a reduction in the time to market a product. Communication is often challenged in geographically distributed working environments.…”
