Distributed multicore fiber sensors

Abstract: Multicore fiber (MCF) which contains more than one core in a single fiber cladding has attracted ever increasing attention for application in optical sensing systems owing to its unique capability of independent light transmission in multiple spatial channels. Different from the situation in standard single mode fiber (SMF), the fiber bending gives rise to tangential strain in off-center cores, and this unique feature has been employed for directional bending and shape sensing, where strain measurement is achi… Show more

“…However, the multiplexing capacity of the FBG strain sensors is limited by the bandwidth of the reflection spectrum. Moreover, the signal crosstalk between the sensors in the FBG sensor network will increase the noise floor of measurement 7 . Hence, the sensing range and spatial coverage density of the high-quality single point optical fiber sensor networks should be further promoted.…”

“…The phase-sensitive OTDR (φ-OTDR) and Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) are typical time-domain systems, in which the optical pulse is employed for distributed sensing. In recent twenty years, great advances in devices and schemes have promoted the improvements on the performances of distributed optical fiber sensors, especially in the aspects of long range [6][7][8] , high spatial resolution 9,10 , high accuracy 11,12 , dynamic measurements [13][14][15][16][17] and multi-parameter sensing 18,19 . For the simplest implementation of φ-OTDR, a highly coherent light source is pulse modulated to interrogate the sensing fiber 20 .…”
