Distributed optical fiber vibration sensor based on Sagnac interference in conjunction with OTDR

Abstract: A real-time distributed optical fiber vibration sensing prototype based on the Sagnac interference in conjunction with the optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) was developed. The sensing mechanism for single- and multi-points vibrations along the sensing fiber was analyzed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The experimental results show excellent agreement with the theoretical models. It is verified that single-point vibration induces a significantly abrupt and monotonous power change in the co… Show more

“…The main difference from MZI is that the light propagating in two fibres (reference arm and sensing arm) are respectively reflected by two mirrors at the fibre ends. (c) Sagnac interference (SI) fibre sensor [130][131][132]. An SI fibre sensor is formed by an optical fibre loop, as shown in Fig.…”

“…The distributed optical fiber vibration sensing (DVS) technique can continuously measure a vibration signal along with an optical fiber [1][2][3][4]. It has the advantages of simple structure, small volume, corrosion resistance, electromagnetic interference resistance, and high sensitivity.…”

“…Of course, the above three methods can only realize the location of single point intrusion. Therefore, in order to realize simultaneous location of multi-point intrusion, a scheme combining Sagnac and OTDR based on pulse light is proposed in [22].…”
