Distributed Personal Learning Environments: Towards a Suitable Architecture

Abstract: Personal Learning Environment is a reference to future learning. In this paper we present a multi-level analysis of the options and requirements in the universe of PLE, analyzing the content management system as the main tool of the learning environment. There are two principal models: distributed applications and mashups. Both have advantages and disadvantages, and they also share a big issue: lack of inter-application communication. We are trying to find a solution to this problem presenting an architecture … Show more

“…Valtonen et al (2012, p. 733) list "tools for managing a personal profile, tools for editing and publishing materials & tools for retrieving external resources and materials from different websites" as the essential components of a PLE. Vázquez and Nistal (2013) describe a perfect PLE should provide knowledge acquisition and discovery, knowledge management, knowledge exchange, communication, social media and content consumption tools, and learning management (Vázquez & Nistal, 2013, p. 38). Other researchers focus more on categorising tools and digital applications needed for a successful PLE.…”

“…All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. In [1] we reviewed the main PLE models, implementations and content management options, and tried to present a possible solution to the lack of tool connectivity in distributed PLEs. At present we are focused on one of the main issues of the PLE concept: most users are not ready to use PLEs.…”
