Distributed Power Quality Conditioning System for Three-Phase Four-Wire Low Voltage Networks

Abstract: This paper presents distributed power quality conditioning system to compensate current and voltage distortions in three-phase four-wire networks caused by unbalanced non-linear single-phase loads. The proposed conditioning system consists of several hybrid filter units installed in various nodes for compensation of excessive neutral currents and voltage distortions in a selected area of the distribution network. The system is open and it can be easily modified by installation of new filter units. A novel hybr… Show more

“…When implementing this method, the equivalent conductivity of each consumer is determined, which is defined with significant assumptions and can have a significant error on the accuracy of the methods. A large number of works are devoted to improving methods for measuring the conductivity of the power supply system and consumers [29]- [34]. Invasive methods quite accurately estimate the parameters of the system and consumers based on the generation of current harmonics of a certain spectrum into the grid and the subsequent measurement of the harmonic voltage.…”

“…A characteristic of these single-phase nonlinear loads is that in the spectrum of current harmonics there are significantly low-frequency harmonics, and the triplen harmonics, which have a zero rotational sequence, are added up in the common neutral wire which is subjected to currents from all three phases. In addition, the unbalance leads to additional zero rotational sequence currents and thus, the neutral conductor is overloaded [1,2].…”

“…Several types of compensating systems in three-phase four-wire power systems are reported in the literature. These usually consist of passive solutions [1,2], synchronous machines, specially-designed transformers such as zig-zag transformers [4,5] and active solutions such as active power filters (APFs) [1,2,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…The literature on power quality focuses on different topics. Some authors introduce techniques for improving the power quality of distribution networks, such as using static compensators [24], distributed energy storage systems [25], and hybrid power filters for unbalanced low-voltage grids [26]. Others focus on improving power quality in grids containing unbalanced systems.…”
