Distribution and ontogeny of gastrin- and serotonin-immunoreactive cells in the proventriculus of developing chick, Gallus gallus domestica

Abstract: The ontogeny and distribution of gastrin- and serotonin-immunoreactive (IR) cell in the proventriculus of chicks (Gallus gallus domestica, n = 60) in different growth periods was examined immunohistochemically using antisera specific to gastrin and serotonin. Gastrin and serotonin-IR cells were detected in chick proventriculus. Gastrin-IR cells were first evident after 12 days of incubation in lamina epithelialis and compound glands, while serotonin-IR cells were observed only in compound glands at that same t… Show more

“…It is known that in the chicks of Gallus domesticus, gastrin IR cells are one of the first to appear in the pylorus mucosa: already on day 12 of incubation, but 2 days later, they are also found in the mucosa of the small intestine (Alison, ; Aksoy and Cinar, ).…”

“…() have described the main endocrine cells in the mucosa of digestive tract in adult ostriches. More detailed studies are available on immunoreactive cells of the gastrointestinal tract of other domestic fowl species (Rawdon, ; Alison, , ; Yamanaka et al., ; Rawdon and Andrew, ; Aksoy and Cinar, ).…”

“…Gastrin immuno-reactive cells have been reported in the chicken proventriculus (Rawdon and Andrew, 1999;Martinez et al, 1993a). The numbers of these gastrin cells are increasing during late embryonic development (Aksoy and Cinar, 2009).…”

“…There is strong parasympathetic innervation of the proventriculus by two networks, respectively the myenteric and submucous plexus (Martínez et al, 2000). Both gastrin and serotonin containing presumptive endocrine cells are found in the proventriculus with these especially abundant in late embryonic development (chicken: Aksoy and Cinar, 2009).…”
