Distribution and Relationships of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Soils and Plants near Major Lakes in Eastern China

Abstract: The distributions and correlations among polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and plants were analyzed. In this study, 9 soil samples and 44 plant samples were collected near major lakes (Hongze Lake, Luoma Lake, Chaohu, Changhu, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Wuhan East Lake, Longgan Lake, Qiandao Lake and Liangzi Lake) in eastern China. The following results were obtained: The total contents of PAHs in soil varied from 99.17 to 552.10 ng/g with an average of 190.35 ng/g, and the total contents of PAHs in… Show more

“…This study was carried out in 11 lakes located in Wuhan City, China: Lianhua Lake (LHH), Huanzi Lake (HZH), Liangzi Lake (LZH), Yue Lake (YH), Northwest Lake (XBH), East Lake (DH), Sha Lake (SH), Chen Lake (CH), South Lake (NH), North Lake (BH), and Moshui Lake (MSH) [33][34][35]. It is divided into urban lakes dominated by built-up land and country lakes dominated by grasslands and forests based on the type of land use in the vicinity [36].…”

“…PHE is one of the 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons listed as priority pollutants [40] which is biotoxic, teratogenic, mutagenic, and difficult to degrade [41,42]. In addition, PHE is reported to be ubiquitous in the environment, especially in contaminated soils [43][44][45][46]. Therefore, PHE is selected as the representative of PAHs.…”

“…Long-term exposure to indoor burning bituminous coal will significantly increase the risk of lung cancer for residents, and there is a significant positive correlation between the concentration of BaP and the mortality of lung cancer [12]. Additionally, BaP can be adsorbed onto atmospheric particles, which can then pollute surface water through sedimentation and precipitation washing [13,14]. BaP accumulates in water bodies and increases in concentration as aquatic organisms grow and develop.…”
