The eco-health assessment of regional reservoirs is important for ensuring the sustainable utilization of water resources and maintenance of water security, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. The present study aimed to construct a B-IBI based on the community characteristics of macrobenthos in ten large and medium-sized reservoirs across four major river basins in Henan Province, China. The results revealed the identification of 92 species belonging to 3 phyla, 6 classes, 18 orders, 47 families. The B-IBI was established based on five key metrics, namely the number of crustacean and mollusca taxa (M6), Intolerant % (M15), the BI index (M17), the BMWP index (M18), and the Shannon-Wiener index (M27). The total B-IBI score of the 44 sites in ten reservoirs ranged from 0.35 to 3.99. The assessment results indicated two reservoirs (QTH and HKC in the Yellow River basin) were classified as poor, whereas only one reservoir (QP in Huai River basin) was classified as excellent. The B-IBI index demonstrates a strong capability to distinguish the impaired sites from the reference sites, thereby indicating its suitability for assessing regional reservoirs in Henan Province.

Lixiahe Plain's local water resources need to be evaluated effectively and comprehensively. This study is based on the multisource data from 60 natural water samples, 16 rainfall monitoring stations, and 2 evaporation monitoring stations from 1965 to 2020. Synchronous series representativeness analysis, water quality analysis, and water resource availability estimation are conducted to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of rainfall, evaporation, and water quality and calculate the availability of various types of water resources. The results indicate that the spatiotemporal distribution of rainfall and evapotranspiration in the study area is uneven, which increases the threat of local floods and droughts. The quality of the main rivers and lakes in the region is good, and the water quality of the drinking water source area and groundwater reaches and even exceeds Class III water standards. In the year 2020, the total water usage in the research area reached 341 million m3. However, the available sum of surface water resources and transit water availability in 2022 was only 201 million m3, so local water supply needs cannot be easily met. Exploring the water resource characterization model of the Lower Rivers Plain can help in local water resource management and protection.

There is an interdependent symbiotic relationship between humans and water; scientific and effective assessment of the human–water symbiosis relationship is of great significance for the promotion of sustainable development. This study developed a novel framework of the human–water symbiosis relationship under an integrated perspective, which included theoretical interpretation, quantitative assessment, pattern discrimination, and an attribution analysis. Based on the symbiosis theory, the theoretical analysis of the human–water relationship was carried out to analyze the three basic elements of the human–water system, and then the evaluation index system of the human–water symbiosis system was constructed to quantitatively assess the development level of the human system and the water system. The Lotka–Volterra model was used to identify the symbiotic pattern, and the human–water symbiosis index was calculated to characterize the health state of the human–water symbiosis system. The main influencing factors of the human–water symbiosis system were further identified through an attribution analysis. Finally, a case study was carried out with 18 cities in Henan Province. Results reveal that (a) the proposed method can effectively realize the quantitative characterization of the human–water symbiosis relationship, with good applicability and obvious advantages; (b) the human–water symbiosis pattern of cities in Henan Province is dominated by the “human system parasitizes water system (H+W−)” pattern, and more attention should be paid to the water system in the subsequent development of it; and (c) the main factors influencing the human system, the water system, and the human–water symbiosis system are the research and development (R&D) personnel equivalent full-time (H7), per capita water resources (W1), and proportion of water conservancy and ecological water conservancy construction investment (W6), respectively. The findings can provide theoretical and methodological support for the study of the human–water symbiosis relationship and sustainable development in other regions.
