Abstract: 1. Colombia with 1941 known recorded bird species is one of the most species rich countries in the world. Efforts are necessary to conserve, study and promote sustainable use of this important taxonomic group throughout Colombia’s vast territory. 2. “…For instance, Forest Areas, including Afro-descendant territories and Indigenous lands, have high potential for the implementation of community-based conservation strategies such as ecotourism. Indeed 20% of Forest Areas lay within the departments of Cauca and Nariño in the West Andes which have the highest diversity of birds in the country (Vélez et al, 2021). The potential economic and conservation benefits of bird-watching have also been highlighted in regions prioritized for economic development such as post-conflict territories (Ocampo-Peñuela and Winton, 2017) which covered 50% of Forest Areas.…”

“…We derived the geographic range covariate using digital range maps from Ayerbe Quiñones ( 2018 ; see also Vélez et al, 2021 ). We implemented biogeographic clipping at a buffer of 160 km around these maps, as well as at the crest of the West Andes and the floor of the Cauca Valley to address the complex biogeography of birds in this region.…”
