Distribution of Frozen-Thawed Spermatozoa in the Reproductive Tract of Gilts at Different Time Intervals After Insemination

Abstract: The distribution of spermatozoa in the uterus and oviducts in twelve gilts was determined 1 and 4 hr, respectively, after insemination of 1010 deep-frozen spermatozoa thawed in seminal plasma or in TESNaK-glucose buffer. The numbers found in the oviducts 4 hr after insemination were markedly higher when the spermatozoa were thawed in seminal plasma. Different theories are advanced concerning the mode of action of the seminal plasma in this respect.

“…Questions remain as to how uterine contractions seen on B-mode images relate to uterine fluid movement. In gilts, the presence of seminal plasma causes delayed clearance of sperm from the uterus when compared to extender (Einarsson and Viring 1973) and our results suggest that the same may be true in mares.…”

“…The life span of frozen thawed spermatozoa is limited to only a few hours (EINARSSON and VIRING, 1973; and hence rapid transport of frozen-thawed spermatozoa to the oviducts may be advantageous when inseminations are done close to the time of ovulation. In A.I.…”

“…2005). A beneficial effect of thawing cryopreserved boar sperm in SP on in vivo sperm longevity (Einarsson and Viring 1973) and on gilt and sow fertility has also been documented (e.g. Crabo and Einarsson 1971; Einarsson et al.…”
