In this study concentrations of heavy metals, such as Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined in water, sediment, muscle, liver and gill of fish (Silurus triostegus, Mastacembelus simack, Mystus halepensis, Orthrias euphraticus) the muscle and liver of crab (Potamon fluviatilis), the internal organs of fresh water snail (Physa acuta), and mussel (Unio elongatulus), and in whole biomass of green algae (Spirogyra sp.) examples collected seasonally from three selected sites (I, II, and III) of Tigris River and from a reference site on Resan Creek. In general, the average Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Fe values in Sites I, II, and III were found to be high in spring and summer. The concentrations of heavy metals in the Tigris River are compared with previous studies in the same sites. The results showed that Cu levels have gradually decreased during recent years. In Tigris River, among the living organisms, i.e., those which are living in benthic region and showing biomonitor characteristic, crab, snail, green algae, mussel and fish are seen to be formed in sequence. Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn values obtained from the muscle of fish and from the mass of internal organs of mussel and snail were found to be under the acceptable values suggested.

The distribution of heavy metals (zinc, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese and lead) was investigated in seawater and in sediment samples from the East London and Port Elizabeth harbours. Both are ports of major importance to the area. The aim was to assess the impact of potential pollution sources, mainly from the cities' formal disposal to the sea, from industry and from dockyard and shipping activities around the harbour. At the East London harbour, metal concentrations in sea water range from 0.2 to 72.0 mg·l -1 for Cd, from 0.6 to 42.6 mg·l -1 for Cu, from 2.4 to 183.0 mg·l -1 for Fe, from 0.6 to 16.3 mg·l -1 for Pb, from 0.9 to 23.9 mg·l -1 for Mn and from 0.5 to 27.6 mg·l -1 for Zn. In sediments, metal concentrations using the total digestion method range from 0.12 to 1. (dry weight) for Fe, from 9.0 to 61.9 mg·g -1 (dry weight) for Pb, from 103.0 to 499.0 mg·g -1 (dry weight) for Mn and from 18.8 to 126 mg·g -1 (dry weight) for Zn. The results are indicative of the contribution of heavy metal pollution from storm water drains and streams which carry runoff from industrial, urban and residential sources. Ship repair activities are also suspected to be responsible for elevated concentrations in the upper reaches of the harbour.

Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn and Cr were estimated using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in sediment, water, fish and shrimp collected from the Subarnarekha River. Fish species Mystus gulio, Puntius conchonius, Labeo calbasu, Labeo rohita and Labeo bata, while the shrimp species Penaeus indicus, were used for the study. The range of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn and Cr in all the samples was found to be 0.004-0.85, 0.75-145.2, 0.03-0.41, 1.25-21.5, 12.4-109.5 and 0.22-11.36 mg kg -1 fresh, respectively. The concentrations of metals in the fish and shrimp exceed the limits of Indian and international standards for food for Cu, Ni, Cd and Zn in some samples. Higher concentrations of the metals were observed in the shrimp as compared to fish samples. The calculated daily intakes of the metals through the consumption of fish and shrimps ranged from 0.30 to 27.0 % of the corresponding tolerable limits suggested by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. The mean target hazard quotient values for the 6 metals were below 1 for all the samples; however, the maximum was more than 1 for shrimp Cu and Cr. The results indicated that the concentration of the metals in shrimps at some locations was alarming and pose an appreciable hazard risk on human health. Potential ecological risk analysis of sediment indicated that most of the sites posed moderate ecological risk with Cd posing a considerable risk at all the sites.
