Distribution of hepatitis B virus genotypes in Korea

Abstract: The prevailing HBV genotype in Korea is C2; the other genotypes occur only rarely. Future studies should include confirmation of the detection of genotypes other than C.

“…However, when we compared the HBsAg seroclearance rate for the same age group of less than 39 years of age, the HBsAg seroclearance rate in our study was lower (0.48%) compared to 0.96% in the Taiwan study [4]. It may be explained by the difference in viral genotypes between Korea (exclusively genotype C) and Taiwan (genotype B and C) [13,14,15,16,17]. The genotype might also affect the serum HBsAg levels and HBsAg seroclearance rates [9,18,19].…”

“…Patients with other causes of chronic liver injury, such as autoimmune hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, Wilson’s disease, and primary biliary cirrhosis, were excluded. Since almost all Korean patients with CHB are reported to be infected with genotype C virus, the enrolled patients were assumed to be genotype C HBV carriers 1517…”

“…However, the most prevalent HBV genotype in Korea is C2, which accounted for 98.1% (370/377) of the total HBV cases in a recent domestic study. 26 Thus, our conclusions may be regarded as being drawn from the C2 genotype. In a recent study, HBV genotypes did not significantly affect the correlation between the 2 qHBsAg assays, 17 but further research would elucidate the effect of HBV genotype differences on the correlations in the levels of HBsAg, HBcrAg, and HBV DNA.…”
