Distribution of hydrocarbon leakage indicators in the Malvinas Basin, offshore Argentine continental margin

Abstract: 8The Malvinas Basin is located in the southernmost Argentinian continental margin. Despite 9 the lack of commercial hydrocarbon accumulation discoveries, the presence of thermogenic 10 gas in gravity cores and seafloor oil slicks point to the existence of an active petroleum 11 system in this basin.

“…Baristeas et al, 2012) as well as those previously described in the Bight Basin. An important differences between the drilled bryozoan mounds in the Eyre and northern Ceduna Sub-basins and the interpreted biogenic mounds in the central Ceduna Sub-basin is the absence of vertical clusters of mounds in the central Ceduna Sub-basin and their development restricted to the top of the Wobbegong Supersequence.…”

The high frequency of pockmarks in the NW and N areas coincide with large subsurface gas anomalies 1 and 2 (Figs.…”

“…At least since the Miocene, sediment accumulation in the Malvinas Basin exceeded that of the Austral Basin. The main source for these sediments was the Fuegian Andes (Baristeas et al, 2012;Sachse et al, 2015). Thus, the second phase of petroleum generation is closely associated with the sediment supply from the Fuegian Andes.…”
