Distribution of keratin 8‐containing cell clusters in mouse embryonic tongue: Evidence for a prepattern for taste bud development

Abstract: The initiation of the morphogenesis of gustatory papillae is independent of innervation. To address the question of whether taste bud formation is associated with gustatory papilla morphogenesis, we examined developing tongues in mouse embryos from embryonic day 11 to birth. Despite the smooth morphological appearance of the lingual dorsal surface at 13 days of gestation, we observed embryonic taste bud primordia as discrete collections of cytokeratin 8-positive and elongated cells in epithelial placodes in th… Show more

“…2 E-G). Although the temporal sequence of papilla development has been established in several species, the mechanisms involved in papilla differentiation, patterning, growth and morphogenesis are not elucidated (Bao et al, 1995;Chou et al, 2001;Krimm et al, 2001;Mbiene and Roberts, 2003;Mistretta et al, 2003). It should be noted that the signalling molecules, growth factors, transcription factors, cell surface receptors and extracellular matrix proteins, which have been implicated in the morphogenetic regulation of many other epithelial appendages, are also associated with the initiation of the tongue papillae formation.…”

“…Similar pattern was demonstrated in the vallate papilla (AhPin et al, 1989;Hirata and Kanaseki, 1989;Wakisaka et al, 1996Wakisaka et al, , 1998Mbiene and Roberts, 2003). However, in contrast to NP, there was drastic shortfall in taste buds in the apical epithelium with few remaining in the adult vallate papilla.…”

“…Eight, advanced stage in adult animals where extensive innervation was traced especially in close relation with taste buds. These patterns are pretty reminiscent of the same events associated with the development of gustatory structures in the vallate papilla (AhPin et al, 1989;Hirata and Kanaseki, 1989;Wakisaka et al, 1996Wakisaka et al, , 1998Chou et al, 2001;Mbiene and Roberts, 2003). The identical coincidences occurred in the two papillae indicate their similarity in the sequential development of nerve fibers in relation with the two distinct subpopulations of taste buds.…”
