Distribution of Lymphocyte Subpopulations in Thyroid Glands of Human Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

Abstract: Based on CD20+ B cells predominantly infiltrating in all HT thyroid tissues we suggested CD20 antibody might be of help for HT treatment. Furthermore based on FoxP3+ Tregs abundantly infiltrating in some of the AITD thyroid specimens, we considered that activating the Tregs' function in comparison to increasing the Tregs' number only, may be a more effective approach to the treatment of AITD in some cases.

“…In addition, using immune staining we also found that CD3, CD4 and CD8 expression were mostly scattered throughout the tumor tissue while occasionally in clusters in the mesenchyme of tumor tissue. This lymphocyte distribution feature was similar with some other diseases …”

“…Thyroid autoimmunity is characterized by the existence of autoantigens like thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroid peroxidase (TPO), and so on, which may play crucial roles in the loss of self-tolerance resulting in disease pathogenesis [4]. Furthermore, thyroid autoimmunity may lead to infiltration of thyroid by T cells and B cells which are the cellular parts of adaptive immune response [5]. The T or B lymphocytic response prevails that can influence the manifested pathology [6].…”

“…T cells have several subpopulations such as CD4+ helper, CD8+ cytotoxic, and regulatory T cells (Tregs) (4). Tregs are a specialized subset of T cells that are co-expressed as CD4+ and CD25+, which have a central role for immune tolerance by downregulating the inflammatory response against self-antigens (5,6,7).…”

“…Tregs are a specialized subset of T cells that are co-expressed as CD4+ and CD25+, which have a central role for immune tolerance by downregulating the inflammatory response against self-antigens (5,6,7). These cells exert their regulatory activity on CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, B cells, and dendritic cells (4). One of the important characteristics of Tregs is the expression of the forkhead/winged helix transcription factor FOXP3 molecules that serve as keys in the maintenance of peripheral tolerance and in controlling the immune response (2).…”
