“…However, inconsistent results, as reported here and elsewhere (e.g. Komnick & Achenbach, 1979;Peacock, 1976), suggest that the Ernst (1972b) technique may not be a reliable method for the localization of (Na+ + K+)-ATPase in the Malpighian tubules of Locusta rnigraforia, and some other epithelia. The biochemical experiments also call into question the validity of this technique in the localization of (Na" + K+)-ATPase.…”

“…In contrast, the absence of a significant reduction in the amount of precipitate associated with the apical microvilli suggests that relatively little (Na+ + K+)-ATPm activity is associated with the apical cell membrane. These findings are consistent with the fact that, with the exception of frog choroid plexus (Quinton et ul.,197% (Na+ + K+)-ATPase has been reported to be almost exclusively associated with the cytoplasmic side of the lateral and basal cell membrane infoldings of secretory epithelia (Ernst, 1972b;Ernst & Mills, 1977;Karnaky et a/., 1976;Peacock, 1976;Komnick & Achenbach, 1979: GreenWald et al, 1984. Nevertheless, on the basis of the present cytochemical study it is not possible to discount So, (Na+ + Kf)-ATPase activity associated with the aP microvilli.…”
