Distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the cerebral cortex of the lizards Psammodromus algirus and Podarcis hispanica: Co‐localization of NPY, somatostatin, and GABA

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to analyze the distribution and characteristics of NPY immunoreactive structures in the cerebral cortex of lizards and to investigate the degree of co-existence of this neuropeptide with somatostatin and GABA. The immunoperoxidase method was applied to vibratome sections as well as to semithin sections. NPY neurons are multipolar or fusiform and were unevenly distributed throughout the brain cortex. Within the medial, dorsomedial and dorsal cortices, most NPY perikarya were loc… Show more

“…Most local interneurons are GABA-immunoreactive (Lopez-Garcia et al 1988 a, Schwerdtfeger and and display either parvalbumin (Fig. 1E), calbindin, or calretinin immunoreactivities (Martinez-Guijarro et al 1991a, Martinez-Guijarro andFreund 1992) as well as a wide spectrum of neuropeptide immunoreactivities (Davila et al 1991) or even NADPH diaphorase/ NOS synthetase (Davila et al 1995).…”

“…GABAergic cortical neurons in turtles also contain one or more neuropeptides (Jones and Hendry, 1986;Davila et al, 1991). For example, the SS+ and NPY + cortical neurons in turtles are likely to be a specific subpopulation of the GABAergic neurons.…”

“…For example, SS+, NPY +, GABA + and LANT6 + neurons have all been found in cortex in lizards (Perez-Clause11 and Fredens, 1988;Davila et al, 1991;Reiner, 1991;Martinez-Guijarro and Freund, 1992). In contrast, neither CCK8+ nor choline@ nonpyramidal neurons of radial morphology have been found in lizard cortex (Perez-Clause11 and Fredens, 1988;Reiner, 1991Reiner, , 1992.…”

“…For example, some chemically defined neuronal types in mammalian hippocampus are also found in reptilian cortex [Dávila et al, 1988[Dávila et al, , 1991Martínez-Guijarro et al, 1991]. In addition, colocalization of GABA with neuropeptides (somatostatin or NPY) or the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin or with NADPH diaphorase activity indicates that a subclass of the GABAergic hippocampal interneurons in reptiles is very similar to one in mammals [Dávila et al, 1991[Dávila et al, , 1993[Dávila et al, , 1995Martínez-Guijarro et al, 1993]. Some of these neuronal types are also involved in similar synaptic circuits within the hippocampus of reptiles and mammals [Dávila et al, 1993].…”
