Invertebrate recolonization at short‐term exposures (2–192 h) in the hyporheic zone of a gravel stream revealed significant depth‐specific differences. In the shallow hyporheic zone (0–20 cm), mean meiofaunal density increased asymptotically stabilizing within 66 h, a similar but nonsignificant pattern was found for macrofauna. Permanent meiofaunal members (e.g., rotifers, chironomids, cyclopoids) were the fastest colonizers of the traps. At the deeper hyporheos (20–50 cm) meiofauna and macrofauna entered the pipes rapidly (2 h) but neither a power curve nor an asymptotic curve described their colonization pattern. Nonlinear regression analysis indicated a significant relationship between amounts of interstitial sediment entering the pipes and abundances of macrofauna and meiofauna.

-Fifty years after the hyporheic zone was first defined (Orghidan, 1959), there are still gaps in the knowledge regarding the role of biodiversity in hyporheic processes. First, some methodological questions remained unanswered regarding the interactions between biodiversity and physical processes, both for the study of habitat characteristics and interactions at different scales. Furthermore, many questions remain to be addressed to help inform our understanding of invertebrate community dynamics, especially regarding the trophic niches of organisms, the functional groups present within sediment, and their temporal changes. Understanding microbial community dynamics would require investigations about their relationship with the physical characteristics of the sediment, their diversity, their relationship with metabolic pathways, their interactions with invertebrates, and their response to environmental stress. Another fundamental research question is that of the importance of the hyporheic zone in the global metabolism of the river, which must be explored in relation to organic matter recycling, the effects of disturbances, and the degradation of contaminants. Finally, the application of this knowledge requires the development of methods for the estimation of hydrological exchanges, especially for the management of sediment clogging, the optimization of self-purification, and the integration of climate change in environmental policies. Mots clés : zone hyporhéique, peuplement des Crustacés, persistance, hétérogénéité.Le peuplement des Crustacés de la zone hyporhéique d'un ruisseau des Pyrénées, le Nert, a été étudié pendant un an sur une aire de 30 m 2 à 0,6 m et 1 m de profondeur. 35 espèces dont 20 stygobies ont été recensées. Ce peuplement est caractérisé par sa persistance due à la stabilité physique de l'environnement interstitiel. Il témoigne cependant d'une très forte hétérogénéité liée aux conditions hydrodynamiques qui régnent au sein des sédiments. The assemblage persistence of this community is related to the physical stability of the interstitial habitat at this site. However this assemblage has a large spatial heterogeneity globally linked to the substream flow paths.
