Distribution of Radiation in Synovectomy of the Knee with 166Ho-FHMA Using Image Fusion

Abstract: A new method to fuse the distribution of radiation in the synovectomy of the knee was developed using SPECT/MRI image registration. Image registration of SPECT and MRI can be used to determine the activity distribution of radioisotopes in relation to synovitis.

“…However, the accurate prediction of the efficacy of RSO is difficult due to patient-related factors such as the type, course, and inflammatory activity within the joint [2, 5]. On average, penetration of radiation following RSO approximates 10 mm [6, 7]. Therefore, the efficacy of RSO largely depends on the radionuclide distribution within the joint.…”

“…SPECT images were used to localize the 166 Ho, whereas the T1- weighted Gd-DTPA MR images were used to visualize the inflamed synovium. A higher uptake of 166 Ho in regions associated with a higher level of synovitis was seen (Vuorela et al 2005). Kraft et al studied the therapeutic effect of 166 Ho-labelled boron macroaggregates.…”
