Distribution of the order Proetida (Trilobita) in Baltoscandian Ordovician strata

Abstract: The trilobite order Proetida forms a minor but important faunal element within the Ordovician strata of Baltoscandia. This review follows the current systematic, taxonomic, and stratigraphical usage and discusses the distribution of these trilobites within the context of the Confacies Belt model. A database of species-level information was derived from numerous publications relating to the Scandinavian and Baltic states and relevant neighbouring regions. Important additional information on stratigraphical occu… Show more

“…These numbers are merely based on the number of new genera or subgenera that are unlikely to have originated in Baltica. Only six of these 28 newcomers represent new major groups: the cyclopygids, odontopleurids, lichids, celmids, calymenoids and telephinids (Pärnaste et al 2009). All these remained fairly unsuccessful in diversity and abundance throughout our time frame.…”

“…In the Uuga section, northwestern Estonia, the boundary between the Joa and Mäeküla members reaches down into the P. proteus Zone (Löfgren et al 2005 , figs 2, 4). The calcareous beds of the Mäeküla Member (upper Leetse Formation) contain very rare, poorly preserved trilobites, which were recently restudied (Pärnaste 2003(Pärnaste , 2006a(Pärnaste , 2006bPärnaste et al 2009). The taxonomic association of trilobites in Estonia differs from that in Sweden (Pärnaste 2006a;Pärnaste et al 2012;Bergström et al 2013) and complicates the correlation between these regions.…”

“…8B; Cyamella sp. of Popp 2007) was found from a broadly contemporaneous geschiebe of the Baltoscandian Red Orthoceratite Limestone (Beinhorn near Hannover, Germany (Pärnaste et al 2009)). The Laurentian species has an anteriorly expanding preglabellar field similar to that of Cyamella (Fig.…”
