Disturbances in the Ionosphere That Accompanied Typhoon Activity in the Vicinity of China in September 2019

Abstract: We have acquired HF Doppler measurements and studied the dynamics of the ionosphere in the ∼100–300 km altitude range during the 1–10 September 2019 period of typhoon activity near the People's Republic of China (PRC). The multifrequency multiple path system located at the Harbin Engineering University campus, the PRC, and probing the ionosphere at oblique incidence was used to identify the effects from the typhoons. The response of the ionosphere to the Typhoon Lingling was detected along three adjacent radio… Show more

“…Infrasound waves of periods that are great enough (1-5 min) reach the ionospheric F region altitudes, modulate the electron density N, and consequently, f D (t) (see, e.g., Gossard and Hooke, 1975;Guo et al, 2019Chernogor et al, 2020). Consider, for example, the Beijing to Harbin radio-wave propagation path.…”

“…The results obtained in [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] permit us to consider a TC (typhoon) to be one of the elements of the ocean-atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere system, which couples the system components listed above. The elucidation of the TC (typhoon) manifestations in the upper atmosphere and geospace has contributed to the understanding of basic processes operating in the system, which is of scientific significance for the studies of the TC (typhoon) as an element of the specified system.…”

“…The relationship between the ionospheric disturbances and the intense atmospheric activities has been found in the foF2 changes (Bauer, 1958) as well as the traveling ionospheric disturbances (Hung et al., 1978; Tsutsui & Ogawa, 1973). There are many claims for the cause of the disturbance, and gravity waves are the main reason (Chernogor et al., 2021, 2022). The acoustic gravity waves caused by the typhoon result in ionospheric disturbances (Tsutsui & Ogawa, 1973).…”
