Disulphide Cross‐Linked Ultrashort Peptide Hydrogelator for Water Remediation

Abstract: A single amino acid in a peptide sequence can play an important role to tune the self-assembly and hydrogelation behaviour. Here, a C-terminal cysteine-containing ultrashort peptide hydrogelator forms hydrogel through noncovalent and covalent interactions. Interestingly, the hydrogel is insoluble in water and buffer solutions at different pH values (1-13) and is thixotropic and injectable. In recent years, removing dyes from contaminated water has become a significant concern because of the shortage of freshwa… Show more

“…Gels have received much attention as adsorbents in the literature. 27,28 Different materials can be used as adsorbents, such as amino-functionalized silica gel, 29 chitosan/graphene oxide nanocomposite aerogel, 30 supramolecular ionogels, 31 metallogels, 32 supramolecular gels, 27,28,33 polymer gels, 20 fly ash, 34 and metal complexes. 35,36 Dye adsorption via reliable, non-toxic, eco-friendly, and low-cost materials is more important.…”

“…Although in the literature there are many materials used for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals from wastewater [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ], the scientific novelty of the present research is the design of a green hydrogel as an economic adsorbent, easy to be prepared and easy to be modified, and cost-effective, but with high efficiency for removing the pharmaceutical contaminants from water. For this purpose, diclofenac sodium was chosen as a “model-drug system”.…”
