Diterpenes and Their Derivatives as Potential Anticancer Agents

Abstract: As therapeutic tools, diterpenes and their derivatives have gained much attention of the medicinal scientists nowadays. It is due to their pledging and important biological activities. This review congregates the anticancer diterpenes. For this, a search was made with selected keywords in PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, The American Chemical Society and miscellaneous databases from January 2012 to January 2017 for the published articles. A total 28, 789 published articles were seen. Among them,… Show more

“…Use of medicinal plants and/or plant‐derived natural products is gaining interest from scientists owing to their safety profile, higher efficacy, and age‐old use in various traditional practices. Terpenes are the secondary metabolites of plants and are abundantly present in nature (Islam, ). Many terpenes are used as food additives and in the cosmetic industry (Islam, da Mata, de Aguiar, et al, ).…”

“…Essential oils (EOs) from various plants consist of mainly sesquiterpenes, some diterpenes, and may also contain simple phenolics. Similar to total EOs, terpenes individual components have important biological properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti‐inflammatory, and anticancer (de Alencar et al, ; Islam, ; Islam, da Mata, de Aguiar, et al, ; Islam, da Silva, de Alencar, Paz, Almeida, & Melo‐Cavalcante, ). To date, several terpenoids have been introduced as agents against NDs and NDDs such as depression, anxiety, epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease.…”

“…Tumor cell migration is important for cancer cells dissemination to other sites leading to metastasis (Islam, ; Zhao et al, ). We further investigated the potential antimetastatic activity of Colombian propolis in OSA cells, demonstrating that the invasiveness of OSA cells was significantly suppressed after treatment with Usm, Fus, Met, and Caj.…”

“…We further investigated the potential antimetastatic activity of Colombian propolis in OSA cells, demonstrating that the invasiveness of OSA cells was significantly suppressed after treatment with Usm, Fus, Met, and Caj. Different diterpenes may act in the migration and invasion of tumor cells (Islam, ), what may explain the effects of Colombian propolis on cell invasion.…”
