Diurnal cycle of the dust instantaneous direct radiative forcing over the Arabian Peninsula

Abstract: Abstract. In this study we attempted to better quantify radiative effects of dust over the Arabian Peninsula and their dependence on input parameters. For this purpose we have developed a stand-alone column radiation transport model coupled with the Mie, T-matrix and geometric optics calculations and driven by reanalysis meteorological fields and atmospheric composition. Numerical experiments were carried out for a wide range of aerosol optical depths, including extreme values developed during the dust storm o… Show more

“…These are comparable to and consistent with (i) the individual instrumental errors of CERES/GERB, (ii) the inter-sensor uncertainties (CERES versus GERB RMSE of 22 and 6 W m −2 for shortwave and longwave), and (iii) previous similar studies (e.g. Osipov et al, 2015).…”

“…when the Sun is at high solar zenith angles. This has an impact on the diur- nal cycle of dust radiative effect (Ansell et al, 2014;Banks et al, 2014;Osipov et al, 2015). Fennec does not provide measurements of skin temperature, and thus we look for the best alternative approximations from ERA-I and MERRA.…”

“…The Red Sea, being enveloped by the Arabian and African deserts, is strongly impacted by windborne mineral dust. Along with profound influence on the surface energy budget over land and the Red Sea (Kalenderski et al, 2013;Osipov et al, 2015;Brindley et al, 2015), dust is an important source of nutrients, more so for the oligotrophic northern Red Sea waters (Acosta et al, 2013). From preliminary assessments it is estimated that five to six major dust storms per year impact the Red Sea region, depositing about 6 Mt of mineral dust into the Red Sea (Jish .…”
