Diurnal Rhythm of β-Carotene in Photosynthetic AlgaGonyaulax polyedra

Abstract: Carotenoids comprise one of the most widespread classes of pigments found in nature. Polyene pigments from the dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra were extracted every hour over a 24 hour period and the levels of beta-carotene during the day-phase were found to be twice as high as during the night-phase period. Using the thermal decomposition of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene endoperoxide, the overall quenching ability of beta-carotene and G. polyedra carotenoids of singlet oxygen were found to be 2.04 x 10(9) M-1 s-1 … Show more

“…In Gonyaulax, their concentration varies over the circadian day, and de-novo synthesis can be induced by light stimulation during the dark phase (with a maximum around midnight; Di Mascio et al 1995). However, when we inhibited their synthesis by Norurazon, we observed no speci®c eects on circadian parameters such as changes in period, phase, or amplitude.…”

“…[14][15][16][22][23][24] The C 30 stationary phase has been widely used for carotenoid separations since, in general, it provides significant resolution of complex mixtures. 22,23 In addition to the column selection, mobile phase choice is extremely important.…”

“…Many methods for the separation of pigments from algae have been developed. 14,15 However, the complexity of their composition makes the resolution of all pigments from different algae species difficult in a single run method.…”

“…The photosynthetic apparatus in algae and higher plants provides the reducing power needed for the nitrate assimilation process and it is under light control (Lillo, 1994;Ninnemann, 1995;Di Mascio, 1995). The circadian rhythm in NR activity in Gracilaria somehow is regulated at the molecular level.…”
