Diurnal variability of atmospheric O2, CO2 and their exchange ratio above a boreal forest in southern Finland

Abstract: Abstract. The exchange ratio (ER) between atmospheric O2 and CO2 is a useful tracer on global and local scales to better understand the carbon budget. The variability of ER (in mol O2 per mol CO2) between terrestrial ecosystems is not well-known, and there is no consensus on how to derive the ER signal to represent an ecosystem, as there are different approaches available, either based on concentration (ERatmos) or flux measurements (ERforest). In this study we measured atmospheric O2 and CO2 concentrations at… Show more

“…Here, the mean diff F O 2 ,c , diff F O 2 ,T and diff F O 2 ,v were -0.53 ± 0.04, -1.98 ± 0.20 and -0.47 ± 0.24 μmol m -2 s -1 , respectively. By applying the three-heights flux-gradient method after Faassen et al (2022), diff F O 2 for the daytime hour had a similar magnitude for diff F O 2 ,c with -0.13 μmol m -2 s -1 and for diff F O 2 ,v with -4.31 μmol m -2 s -1 , and was larger for diff F O 2 ,T with 4.72 μmol m -2 s -1 . The corresponding nighttime diff F O 2 ,c , diff F O 2 ,T and diff F O 2 ,v derived from the three-heights flux-gradient method were -0.50, -2.41 and -0.66 μmol m -2 s -1 , indicating the similar diff F O 2 ,c and diff F O 2 ,v , but a larger magnitude of diff F O 2 ,T than with two-heights flux-gradient method.…”

“…They derived scalar concentrations at three heights (z/ht = 0.9, 3.7 and 6.9 with ht = 18 m), fitted a quadratic scalar-height relationship, and expressed the vertical gradient as the first derivative of z (see Eq. ( 10) and ( 11) by Faassen et al (2022)). In our study, we selected the three heights at z/ht = 1.05, 1.45 and 2 with ht = 37.5 m, to be with all heights above the canopy.…”
