Diurnal variation of intraoral pH and temperature

Abstract: Objective/Aims:The aim of this study was to measure continuously the intraoral pH and temperature of healthy individuals to investigate their diurnal variations.Materials and Methods:Seventeen participants (mean age, 31±9 years) wore a custom-made intraoral appliance fitted with a pH probe and thermocouple for two sets of 24 h, while carrying out normal daily activities including sleep. The continuous changes in intraoral pH and temperature were captured using a sensor placed on the palatal aspect of the upper… Show more

“…Standardization of saliva sampling, handling and storage is a pre‐requisite for strengthening of evidence for saliva as a reliable diagnostic medium. Future studies should report parameters concerning subject status, that is pre‐procedural instructions, collection method, collection time and storage for procedural verification and replication of results (Choi, Lyons, Kieser, & Waddell, ). A detailed rigorous protocol for the collection and handling of salivary samples is recommended to safeguard quantitative and reproducible analysis of biological samples.…”

“…It has been reported that in females, unstimulated salivary flow rate and pH are higher during the ovulation period than during the menstrual period 33 . It was reported that saliva microbiome differed more between individuals than the diurnal variation 34 , and the pH differed greatly between day and night but does not fluctuate significantly among different timepoints during daytime 35 . Hence, we utilised a relatively stable stimulated saliva.…”

“…Monitoring system design: It is very important that uninterrupted disease monitoring of patients should be possible with patient's personal phones/ tablets through an app. In monitoring appliances, oral factors will be monitored with the help of intraoral sensors [26]. Those intraoral sensors will be incorporated within oral appliance, which patients can easily use on daily basis in the oral cavity.…”
