Divergence history of the Carpathian and smooth newts modelled in space and time

Abstract: Information about demographic history is essential for the understanding of the processes of divergence and speciation. Patterns of genetic variation within and between closely related species provide insights into the history of their interactions. Here, we investigated historical demography and genetic exchange between the Carpathian (Lissotriton montandoni, Lm) and smooth (L. vulgaris, Lv) newts. We combine an extensive geographical sampling and multilocus nuclear sequence data with the approximate Bayesian… Show more

“…Previous studies have suggested some spatial, temporal and genomic heterogeneity of introgression Zieliński, Dudek, Stuglik, Liana, & Babik, 2014;Zieliński et al, 2016Zieliński et al, , 2013. Demographic models have suggested asymmetry of historical gene flow, predominantly into Lm, within the IN zone (Zieliński et al, 2016). Heterogeneity and asymmetry of introgression were also suggested by detection of two chromosomal blocks grouping genes exhibiting segregation distortion in F 2 interspecific hybrids (Niedzicka, Dudek, Fijarczyk, Zieliński, & Babik, 2017).…”

“…So far there has been no information about the strength and form of postzygotic reproductive isolation between L. montandoni and L. vulgaris . Despite strong prezygotic isolation, there is evidence for extensive interspecific flow of the mitochondrial DNA (Babik et al 2005; Zieliński et al 2013) as well as for some nuclear gene flow, which is heterogeneous across the genome (Nadachowska-Brzyska et al 2012; Zieliński et al 2014; Stuglik and Babik 2016; Zieliński et al 2016). The linkage map that we report here will facilitate an understanding of the basis of reproductive isolation between these species.…”

“…The two lineages within L. vulgaris diverged more than 1 Mya (Pabijan et al, 2017;Zieliński et al, 2016), and each of them has experienced a distinct history of hybridization with L. montandoni (Zieliński et al, 2016). In particular, the IN zone appears older .…”
