One of the main challenges in the transition to more sustainable agriculture is designing and selecting agricultural systems that are stable and perturbation resistant. Crop diversification is now recognized as a decisive part of sustainable agroecological development. It is one of the crucial agroecological practices that prove ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, biological N fixation, pest and disease regulation, erosion control, climate regulation, soil fertility maintenance, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. To maximize these desired outcomes, understanding, designing, and optimizing, the adoption of crop diversification is crucial for the sustainability of food production under low-input practices. One approach to building sustainable food security and optimal management systems for limited resources is through the application of crop simulation models in multi-cropping systems. Indeed, some models can be used to simulate intercropping systems such as DSSAT, APSIM, ALMANAC, STICS, and FASSET. Thus, the application of such powerful models provides an option to redesign crop mixtures in appropriate sowing proportion and sowing date to tackle the enormous challenges facing agricultural development. In this regard, this review intended to assess existing suitable model to simulate multiple cropping systems and its role in building resilient crop production and ecosystem services without damaging the environment. It also highlights the key role of crop diversity as an ecosystem service provider to guarantee plant productivity in emerging systems of sustainable agriculture.

This paper reports a realistic analysis of a region using Grounded Theory (GT) to provide a sustainable model for family farming systems based on the intercropping system in rural communities of Iran. Furthermore, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) was applied to assign weights to the criteria and sub-criteria of intercropping and monocropping systems. According to the model, the main phenomenon was “sustainability in the family farming system based on intercropping”. In this model, the causal factors were found to include behavioral and attitudinal motivators. Micro- and macro-factors were identified as the interfering factors in family farming systems based on intercropping. Social factors, economic components, and environmental potentials were the contextual factors of this system. Finally, the consequences included the conceptual development and evolution of sustainability, socioeconomic transformation, and ecological-environmental transformation. The results of FAHP showed that the environmental criterion was ranked the first among all criteria underpinning the sustainability of the intercropping system.

The benefits of cereal-legume mixed cropping is a sustainable agricultural practice. However, knowledge of the genotypic differences of semi-leafless pea varieties is not enough to help them compete with cereals. In this study, the effects of Lithuania’s newest Pisum sativum cultivars (‘Egle DS’ and ‘Lina DS’) and, for comparison, a control cultivar (‘Jūra DS’) established with Avena sativa in mixed cropping system were investigated. Three years of field trials (2018, 2019 and 2020) with four experiments involved three different mixtures of each field pea cultivar with oat. The aboveground biomass of mixed cropped new field pea cultivars was found to be significantly higher: biomass of cultivars ‘Egle DS’ increased by 17.0% and ‘Lina DS’ by 7.2% on average compared with the control cultivar ‘Jūra DS’. For the mixed cropping system, statistically greater total aboveground biomass was observed with plant ratios of 50% pea + 50% oat and 60% pea + 40% oat compared to peas monocultures. Mixed cropped oat was the dominant species in all tested mixture compositions; however, the highest total grain yield of mixed crops was obtained when new pea ‘Lina DS’ and ‘Egle DS’ cultivars were included in the mixtures compared with the control cultivar. The new pea cultivar ‘Egle DS’ had a greater effect on protein content compared to other tested pea cultivars. In the new pea cultivars ‘Lina DS’ and ‘Egle DS’, the higher photosynthetic capacity and aboveground biomass of mixed cropped pea with oat showed mixture effects in the mixed cropped system and could increase total yield compared with pea monoculture. Generally, the new pea cultivars displayed a greater Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) value, resulting in the greatest yield among the mixtures on average for all three years and all four experiments. Future research could optimize the effects of pea cultivar mixtures with cereals to further improve the yield of organic mixed cropping systems.
