The Impact of Transformation of Farmers’ Livelihood on the Increasing Labor Costs of Grain Plantation in China

Analyzing the recessive impacts of farmers’ livelihood transformation on the surging labor cost in grain production is conducive to finding optimization paths for grain production. This study developed the Residual Livelihood Ratio (RLR) and the Livelihood Simpson Index (LSI) to measure the transformation of farmers' livelihood in China, and applied the multiple regression model to explore the influence of the transformation of farmers' livelihood on the labor cost of grain production. The results show that because of the soaring increment in labor cost, the net profit of rice, wheat, and maize production decreased largely in China. The LSI increased, while the RLR decreased, which indicated that farmers’ livelihoods transitioned towards a more unbalanced income–expenditure but more flexible employment. The Residual Livelihood Ratio; the mechanization input; the grain yield per unit area; the non-grain plantation degree; and the non-agricultural land use degree showed negative impacts on labor cost in grain production, whereas the Livelihood Simpson Index and Engel’s coefficient of farmers showed positive impacts on the labor cost. This paper proposes targeted policy implications for labor cost control of the grain production in China.

<table width="604" border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tbody><tr><td valign="top" width="406"><p dir="ltr"><span>The existence of Citizenship Education in Indonesia has a significant and strategic role in the effort to build the character of the nation. Citizens with the Spirit of Nationalism are one form of the nation's character. Citizenship education is taught from elementary school to college by the School of Citizenship Education (SCE). Citizenship Education in the Community is called the Community of Citizenship Education (CCE). The existence of Citizenship Education in strengthening the nationalism of citizens is also present in the border area, precisely in Sebatik Island Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province, which is directly adjacent to Malaysia. However, people in this region use ringgit money to buy, sell, and use Malaysian products to meet their daily needs, as well as the alleged existence of dual citizenship that is legally prohibited in Indonesia, which shows indications of weakening nationalism. This research uses a Qualitative Approach with the Case study method with the Informant who took a purposive sampling of Government, Community Leaders, Youth Leaders, Teachers, Military, and Journalists. This research aims to find forms of Citizenship Education for people in border areas of the State to Strengthen Nationalism. The results show that Forms of Strengthening border community nationalism are implemented through Community Citizenship Education by the Government, Entrepreneurs, Youth, and Media. Meanwhile, the School of Citizenship Education is implemented by Citizenship Education Teachers.</span></p><div><span><br /></span></div><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

This study aims to know, analyze, and formulate the strengthening of nationalism for the border community on Sebatik Island, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province through citizenship education. Sebatik Island is one of Indonesia’s border areas located in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province, which is directly adjacent to Sabah, Malaysia. The development gap between the country’s border areas shapes the attitudes and behaviors of Sebatik border communities, who have the preference to use foreign currency, consume foreign products, and have dual citizenship. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained from in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The results showed that civic education in schools can contribute to strengthening nationalism through school-based civic education and community-based citizenship education which is carried out among others by lecture methods, socialization of national insight, habituation, field action, and involvement in basic military training organizations. The recommendations of this research can be used as a role model in strengthening the nationalism of Indonesian society, especially in border areas.
