Diversity and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in the Italian subalpine lacustrine district

Abstract: Nine lakes (Garda, Maggiore, Como, Iseo, Lugano, Idro, Pusiano, Ledro, and Levico) located in the Italian subalpine lacustrine district were chosen for a comparative study of the diversity and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins. All nine lakes are known to host different toxic cyanobacteria, mainly Planktothrix rubescens. An analytical protocol has been used, based on LC-MS technique, for determining 20 different toxins (14 microcystins, 2 nodularins, anatoxin-a and 3 cylindrospermopsins). In the investigat… Show more

“…The most abundant congeners were LR in M. aeruginosa and RRdm in P. rubescens. The relative abundances and identities of congeners were in accordance with previous observations (Cerasino and Salmaso, 2012;Salmaso et al, 2014;Cerasino et al, 2016) Fig. 3.…”

“…In Italy, reports of ATX are quite rare, refer ring exclusively to environmental samples (e.g., Cerasino and Salmaso, 2012). The production of ATX was associated with blooms or higher development of Anabaena planctonica (Doli chospermum planctonicum) (Bruno et al, 1994), Anabaena crassa (D. crassum) (Messineo et al, 2009) and "a peculiar P. rubescens population" (Viaggiu et al, 2004;Messineo et al, 2009).…”

“…In a recent work, Cerasino and Salmaso (2012) documented a widespread presence of ATX in the lake district south of the Alps. Based on analyses carried out on environmental sam pies collected during the warmer months, detectable con centrations of ATX ranging between 0.1 and 0.6 ~~g L 1 were found in the lakes Garda, Iseo, Como and Maggiore, i.e.…”

“…MCs were determined by LC-MS/MS (Waters Acquity UPLC 1 directly coupled to an AB Sciex 4000 QTRAP hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometer). The analyses followed the methods described in Guzzella et al (2010) and Cerasino and Salmaso (2012).…”
