Diversity and distribution of stoneflies in the area of Plitvice Lakes National Park and along the Mediterranean river Cetina (Croatia)

Abstract: The stonefly fauna of Croatia is poorly known with only 28 species so far officially recorded. This number should be much higher because for some neighbouring countries about 100 stonefly species are known. The aim of this work was to investigate and to compare the diversity and distribution of stoneflies in the continental and the Mediterranean part of the Western Dinaric region in Croatia. The results are based on identification of adult insects and larvae. Adult Plecoptera were collected at the Plitvice Lak… Show more

“…Tufa is a porous calcium carbonate deposit that develops in carbonate-supersaturated water, where calcite crystals are deposited on immersed objects (Chafetz and Folk, 1984;Riding, 1991). Uneven deposition of calcite across the flow results in variable microhabitats, high biological diversity and specific insect communities inhabiting tufa barriers (Ivković et al, 2010;Popijač and Sivec, 2009;Previšić et al, 2007).…”

“…Over the past decade, an increasing number of studies have examined the diverse aquatic insect assemblages of the Dinaric karst (e.g. Previ sić et al, 2007;Popijač and Sivec, 2009;Šemnički et al, 2012;Ivković and Plant, 2015), however to date, mayflies have mainly been studied in relation to habitat preferences determined by physical and chemical water characteristics (Vilenica et al, 2014;2016a;2016b;, whereas information regarding their microhabitat preferences remains scarce (e.g. Savić et al, 2010).…”
