RESUMENSe revisan las especies de crisópidos presentes en la fauna de la Península Ibérica e Islas Baleares donde, hasta la fecha, están representadas por 50 especies pertenecientes a 13 géneros. Tras una diagnosis de la familia y citar algunos elementos sobre su historial paleontológico y su distribución, se aportan algunos datos generales sobre su morfología y su biología, sus estadios juveniles y comportamiento, y se comenta una breve introducción sobre la historia en el conocimiento de la familia, y en particular en la Península Ibérica y Baleares. Se anotan algunas correcciones en las fechas de publicación de algunos taxa que afectan a la taxonomía, y por ello se propone a Rexa almerai (Navás, 1919) n. comb. como sinónima anterior de Rexa lordina Navás, 1920 n. syn. Se incluye una lista de las especies pertenecientes a la fauna de la Península Ibérica y Baleares, una clave de identificación de los imagos de las subfamilias, géneros y especies citadas, y una clave de sus larvas a nivel genérico. De cada una de estas especies se recopilan y se anotan todas las referencias bibliográficas existentes desde 1972, relativas a las especies de la zona estudiada, tanto con la denominación actualmente aceptada, como de sus sinonimias y/o cualquier otra combinación nomenclatural bajo las cuales han sido citadas. SUMMARY Green-lacewings (Insecta, Neuropterida, Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic IslandsThe present contribution reviews the green lacewing fauna of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands where, to date, 50 species belonging to 13 genera are known to occur. Coccinellidae as predators of mites: Stethorini in biological control

The Stethorini are unique among the Coccinellidae in specializing on mites (principally Tetranychidae) as prey. Consisting of 90 species in two genera, Stethorus and Parasthethorus, the tribe is practically cosmopolitan. The Stethorini are found in a diverse range of habitats, including many agricultural systems such as pome and stone fruits, brambles, tree nuts, citrus, avocadoes, bananas, papaya, palms, tea, cassava, maize, strawberries, vegetables, and cotton, as well as ornamental plantings, grasslands, forests, and heathlands. Tetranychid mite outbreaks became common in many agricultural systems only after World War II, when widespread use of broad-spectrum insecticides increased. Stethorini were initially appreciated only for their ability to suppress severe outbreaks of tetranychid populations. However, research on their prey searching behaviors reveals that Stethorini use visual and olfactory stimuli to locate small mite colonies in patchy distributions, and can be very effective in regulating their prey at low densities. Moreover , acariphagous coccinellids colonize mite outbreaks earlier, and consume more pest mites, than many other mite predators. Key to the use of coccinellids in conservation biological control programs is the provision of overwintering habitats and refuges from pesticides in and near cropland. When these conditions are fulfilled, Stethorini often play important roles in maintaining suppression of tetranychid populations. Examples of successful biological mite control with Stethorini include apple orchards in Pennsylvania, USA, and citrus in Asia, and the unintended disruption of a tetranychid-based biological control program for the invasive woody weed, gorse, in Australia and New Zealand. The systematics and taxonomy of this group is challenging with many cryptic species, and molecular diagnostic tools are sorely needed. How best to utilize their mite-suppressive potential in diverse settings requires better knowledge of their requirements including utilization of alternative foods, refuges for dormancy and from nonselective pesticides , and host-finding mechanisms.

Phyto traps were attached to twigs, main branches and trunks of Japanese pear trees in central Japan in autumn of 2004, to evaluate the effectiveness of the trap as a tool to study overwintering phenology of arboreal phytoseiid mites. A subset of the traps was inspected and replaced at two-weeks intervals ("short-term Phyto trap"), in order to evaluate movement of phytoseiid mites on the trees in a short-term. The remaining traps were left undisturbed and collected monthly from January to May 2005 ("long-term Phyto trap"), to know what species overwinter in the traps and when they leave them. Most phytoseiid mites were collected in the traps on twigs. The most abundant phytoseiid species was Typhlodromus vulgaris Ehara. In the short-term traps on twigs, adult females and males of T. vulgaris were collected until mid-November 2004, when the pear trees became completely defoliated, but few mites were collected from December to April. On the other hand, adult females of T. vulgaris were abundant in the long-term traps on twigs sampled from January to April, but other stages of mites were never collected. These results indicate that T. vulgaris had moved to the long-term traps by late November, and that only adult females had overwintered in the traps. These females began to move and reproduce in early May. By that time immature developmental stages of T. vulgaris were also recorded in the short- and long-term Phyto traps. Our results confirmed that the Phyto trap was a useful tool for estimating overwintering phenology of phytoseiid mites on trees.
