Diversity in landraces of summer squash from Jordan

Abstract: Forty one half-sib families of summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) landraces collected from Jordan were evaluated for 17 morphological and horticultural traits at the Agricultural Experimental Station in the Jordan Valley. A large diversity both within and among families was observed for many traits including plant growth, flowering and sex expression, colour of photosynthetic organs, fruit shape and fruit number per plant. Correlation coefficients were significant among many useful traits. The possible utilizat… Show more

“…Cucurbita germplasm has received similar attention by Chinese researchers (Chen 1993;Zhou et al 1995;Ren 1998). Other reports on horticultural evaluations directed toward the identification of superior genotypes among local landraces include studies of Cucurbita landraces from Cuba (Rios Labrada, Fernandez Almirall, and Casanova Galarraga 1998) and Jordan (Kasrawi 1995) and of C. melo landraces from India (Seshadri and More 2002), Italy, and Albania (Ricciardi et al 2003).…”

“…Of all the species of the Cucurbitaceae, Cucurbita pepo is perhaps the most polymorphic one and one of the most polymorphic of the plant kingdom (Naudin, 1856). Moreover, a large diversity in 17 morphological and horticultural traits among the tested summer squash landraces was observed (Kasrawi, 1995). In our experiment, the small number of vine types (only a single landrace was observed) in the collection could be attributed to the replacement of vine landraces by the modern bush cultivars.…”

“…The green base of petals is governed by the Gb gene which is dominant to the plant with no band (Dutta and Nath, 1972). On squash, leaf silvery trait is possibly under genetic control (Kasrawi, 1995).…”

“…This might be caused by limited cultivation of C. argyrosperma in this country, as it was known by few individuals of Mbazwana and Mseleni villages at Umkhanyakude district only. It could also result from this landrace becoming extinct from all parts of South Africa and is rarely grown by communities; as in accordance with the study of C. pepo landraces in Jordan [19]. Therefore its conservation and improvement is essential.…”
