“…Until this study, variation was rarely mentioned for kinorhynch species (e. g., Neuhaus et al , 2014Neuhaus & Kegel 2015) and was not even thought to be of any importance for kinorhynch taxonomy (Sørensen & Pardos 2008;Neuhaus 2013;Dal Zotto et al 2013;Yamasaki 2016Yamasaki , 2017. Our current observation of an enormous amount of variation in C. shirleyi sp.…”

“…nov. show a considerable amount of variation in the arrangement of spines, female appendages, and sensory spots (Table 5). Whereas variation in the latter two characters has not been considered as critical for taxonomic purposes, the spine formula is usually used as one of the key characters for identifying species of Kinorhyncha (Neuhaus 1993(Neuhaus , 2013Dal Zotto et al 2013;Sørensen & Pardos 2008;Neuhaus et al , 2014Neuhaus & Kegel 2015;Yamasaki 2016Yamasaki , 2017. “…Our material showed the characters defining the monotypical genus Franciscideres Dal Zotto et al, 2013. The specific identification faces the taxonomical conflict arising from the insufficiency of the original information about the type species and the recent evidence that Kinorhyncha species can show a considerably larger intraspecific variability than previously assumed (Neuhaus & Sørensen 2013;Neuhaus & Kegel 2015;Neuhaus et al 2014Neuhaus et al , 2019Sánchez et al 2019;. Though intraspecific variation was rarely thought to be important for the taxonomy of kinorhynchs (Sørensen & Pardos 2008;Dal Zotto et al 2013;Neuhaus 2013;Yamasaki 2016Yamasaki , 2017, the huge variation described for some species (e.g., Neuhaus et al 2019;Sánchez et al 2019) highlights a change of mind and emphasizes the need of paying attention to such variation. TABLE 1.…”

“…This unusual colouring, combined with the remote locality far away from regions with a better-explored kinorhynch fauna, made us expect that this was a new species, that could be described in a short, taxonomic contribution. However, reality turned out to be way more complicated, and three years of intensive work and 64 manuscript pages later, we could conclude that the Hawaiian species was Echinoderes sensibilis species that so far was known from Japan only (Adrianov et al 2002b;Yamasaki 2017). The path to this conclusion went through the redescription of thirteen known species of Echinoderes, examination of so far unidentified species from museum collections, synonymization of two known species, and the description of two species new to science.…”
