Diversity of Medicinal Plants among Different Tree Canopies

Abstract: The moist temperate forests in Northern Pakistan are home to a variety of flora and fauna that are pivotal in sustaining the livelihoods of the local communities. In these forests, distribution and richness of vegetation, especially that of medicinal plants, is rarely reported. In this study, we carried out a vegetation survey in District Balakot, located in Northeastern Pakistan, to characterize the diversity of medicinal plants under different canopies of coniferous forest. The experimental site was divided … Show more

“…The composition of the entomofauna in the crops was represented with range-abundance graphs or Whittaker curves, which order the species (in this case families), from the most to the least abundant, that is, they are based on the relative abundance of each family, Rank abundance curves are useful as biodiversity indices complement [22]. Finally, a principal component analysis was developed to see the relationship between the EFG and the TFG's and to see the behavior of the composition of the families of insects in the three crops.…”

“…A digital pH meter was used to determine electrical conductivity (EC) and pH from soil water extracts. The organic matter was determined using the Walkley-Black method [27], which was further refined by [28], and the total nitrogen content was determined using the [27] Kjeldahl method. The contents of potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) were measured [28].…”

“…The NTFP are used for various purposes by human societies, mainly by the poorest ones (Shackleton et al, 2011(Shackleton et al, , 2018, serving as food, fuel, fiber, building materials, rubber production, medicine, dye for fabrics, among other purposes (Melese, 2016;Penn, 2008;Zubair et al, 2021). One of the main NTFPs in the Amazon is andiroba oil, historically used by traditional populations and very popular throughout the region, which is extracted from the seeds of trees known as andirobas.…”
