“…The families with the highest number of reports are Diclidophoridae and Monocotylidae in osteichthyan and chondrichthyan hosts, respectively. The Atlantic Ocean exhibited the major number of HPAs (67%) compared to Pacific waters, these results are mainly due the numerous studies on marine teleost as hosts from the Brazilian coastal zone (Luque & Poulin, 2007; Justo & Kohn, 2015).…”

“…Based on previous descriptions and figures, although some authors failed to determine the number of testes in their descriptions, the number of testes in Neohexostoma is usually less than 50 and testes are arranged in two or three alternating rows [9,27,34,35]. Abundant testes (185-246 in our new species) are usually seen in some species of Hexostoma, such as H. grossum, H. sibi, and H. dissimile [14,29,33,34]. Moreover, the terminal portion of the vagina in members of the Hexostomatidae is typically represented by two symmetrical pads with densely conical spines forming two serrated edges, which is dissimilar to that in our species.…”

“…Probably for the same reason, several parasites observed in tunas from the western Atlantic Ocean, including E. alletteratus, were not found in the Mediterranean Sea: i.e. Capsala maccallumi, Hexostoma lintoni, Udonella caligorum, Sibitrema poonoui and Unicolax anonymus (Alves and Luque, 2006;Justo and Kohn, 2015;Mele et al 2015). Morphological and genetic analyses of the didymozoid trematodes revealed the presence of four species that had not been previously described in E. alletteratus.…”
