Diversity of Rubiaceae in Ilocos Norte, Northwestern Luzon, Philippines: A Preliminary Checklist, Their Distribution, and Conservation Status

Abstract: The northern Cordillera Mountain Range of Ilocos Norte is an important site for floristic studies in the northwestern part of the Philippines. However, most of its forested areas remain understudied and limited data are available on the structure of its floristic communities. Here, a preliminary checklist of Rubiaceae species in Ilocos Norte is provided with notes on their distribution and conservation status. The field survey was conducted from April 2019 to March 2020 in Kalbario Patapat Natural Park (KPNP),… Show more

“…There are 112 identified Psychotria species in the Philippines, with the majority identified as endemic (Biag & Alejandro, 2021). However, with the rapid loss of habitat and anthropogenic activities, almost half of the identified endemic species are assumed to be extinct (Batuyong et al, 2020). Despite this group's diversity, only a few phytochemical and antimicrobial studies have been conducted regarding the Philippine Psychotria.…”

“…Arriola & Alejandro, were selected for antioxidant capacity testing. The four species G. microphylla, T. ternifolius, P. triflora, and K. monstrosa were selected based on the initial phytochemical screening (Batuyong et al, 2021). The overall phytochemical composition of Rubiaceae plants lends to their potential as sources of bioactive compounds.…”
