Diversity of Trypanosomatids in Cockroaches and the Description ofHerpetomonas tarakanasp. n.

Abstract: In this study, we surveyed six species of cockroaches, two synanthropic (i.e. ecologically associated with humans) and four wild, for intestinal trypanosomatid infections. Only the wild cockroach species were found to be infected, with flagellates of the genus Herpetomonas. Two distinct genotypes were documented, one of which was described as a new species, Herpetomonas tarakana sp. n. We also propose a revision of the genus Herpetomonas and creation of a new subfamily, Phytomonadinae, to include Herpetomonas,… Show more

“…The genus Phytomonas was polyphyletic in our analyses, differing from previous studies in which its monophyly was recovered based on molecular data (e.g. Hughes and Piontkivska, ; Teixeira et al., ; Votýpka et al., , ; Yurchenko et al., , ; Jaskowska et al., ; Zanetti et al., ). Although such a result may relate to discrepancies in taxon sampling, the affinity of Phytomonas to Herpetomonas , and the closer affinity of Phytomonas macgheei to P. serpens than to Phytomonas francai , partially corroborate the literature (e.g.…”

“…The initial taxonomic identification was provided by the original depositors. Trypanosomatids were grown at 23°C in liquid Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) medium (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, USA) supplemented as described previously [41] and passaged weekly. For growth curves at different temperatures (23°C and 34°C), flagellates were seeded at a concentration of 30,000 cells per ml, and counted in triplicates at days 1, 3, and 5.…”

“…Another genome, recently sequenced and annotated by us, is that of a trypanosomatid parasitizing fleas, Blechomonas ayalai, which belong to an early-branching clade Blechomonadinae, a sister group to subfamilies Phytomonadinae and Leishmaniinae (Fig. 1) (Jirk u et al 2012;Yurchenko et al 2016).…”
