Dizygotic Twinning, Birth Order, Female Psychology, and Coital Rates

Abstract: It is well established that the dizygotic (DZ) twinning rate increases with maternal age until about age 38 and thereafter declines, and that within each maternal age category, it increases (apparently indefinitely) with parity [5]. Interpretation of this increase with parity is not immediately clear. One may formulate two hypotheses, one or both of which may be true.Hypothesis 1: Twin-prone women are more fertile than other women and therefore they form a progressively increasing proportion of the mothers at … Show more

“…It is generally accepted that the sex ratio among twin births is lower than in singletons [4,8,[10][11][12][13]. In our data the sex ratio among twins was 0.4917, which is signincantly lower than the ratio in singleton births for the same period, 0.5166 [19].…”

“…Among the factors affecting twinning, the influence of maternal age and parity is well known [2] and there are some insights on the effect of nutritional [14] and environmental [4,12] factors, as well as psychosocial influences [16,21], while the role played by other factors is less clear. The genetic component of twinning has been investigated, among the others, by Parisi et al [17] who found that twinning proneness can be inherited, mainly through the maternal line.…”

“…It seems unlikely that legitimacy in young women should directly influence spontaneous abortion rates, or the probability of fertilization, given that coitus has occurred. Hence, it seems likely that the parameter at issue is double ovulation, thus vindicating Allen's suggestion, and impugning my previous scepticism [21] on the point. Indeed, it seems that the present evidence is among the strongest so far adduced for coitus-induced ovulation.…”
