DMAP: integrated mobility and service management in mobile IPv6 systems

Abstract: Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) is a work in progress IETF standard for enabling mobility in IPv6 networks and is expected to have wide deployment. We investigate an integrated mobility and service management scheme based on MIPv6 with the goal to minimize the overall network signaling cost in MIPv6 systems for serving mobility and service management related operations. Our design extends IETF work-in-progress Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) with the notion of dynamic mobility anchor points (DMAPs) for each mobile node … Show more

“…The approach is similar to regional registration for mobility management [2] except that multicast services are being considered. The concept of multicast agent (MA) was investigated [5] to provide multicast services to mobile group members in multiple foreign networks.…”

“…Our approach also attempts to combine the advantages of RS and BT. It extends the design concept of per-user regional registration [2] for integrated mobility and service management for unicast services to mobile multicast services. The objective is to demonstrate that each MH can autonomously determine its optimal service area under regional registration based on its service and mobility characteristics such that the overall network traffic generated due to multicast tree maintenance (because of user mobility) and multicast packet delivery (because of multicast service) can be minimized.…”

“…Existing schemes proposed for Mobile IP networks (e.g., [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14]) and cellular networks (e.g., [15,16]), however, cannot be applied to WMNs without nontrivial modifications and performance penalty, due to significant differences in network characteristics. For example, Manuscript received December 16, 2010; revised September 19, 2011 andFebruary 27, 2012.…”
