DNA Fingerprinting and Quality Traits of Corbarino Cherry-like Tomato Landraces

Abstract: Twenty-five landraces of the cherry-like tomato named Corbarino, a typical niche product grown in the Sarno valley of the Campania region, have been characterized. The landraces used have been compared to eight cultivars widely spread in the same area of cultivation. The genetic diversity within and between landraces was evaluated through the comparison of DNA fingerprints obtained with (GATA)(4) probe hybridized to TaqI digested genomic DNA. Twenty-two of the Corbarino landraces were homogeneous and were uneq… Show more

“…However, in practical production these factors are often variable and closely linked to one other (Hart and Scott, 1995). It is well known that the amount of each antioxidant in tomato fruits is strongly influenced by varietal differences (genetic influence), in addition to agronomical, geographical and environmental parameters (Hernandez et al, 2007;Abushita et al, 2000;Andrakis et al, 2004). Several hundred cultivars and hybrids of tomato having different chemical and nutritional characteristics are available on the market, in response to fresh consumption and industry requests.…”

“…Obviously, in these cases, the cause of the segregation observed should have emerged before the collection. Segregating or seed mixture populations have also been found in traditional tomato varieties in other areas, for example, in the "Corbarino" variety from Italy (Andreakis et al, 2004), though in that case, it remained unclear if that situation arose during the conservation process in the genebank or previously.…”
