Introduction: Advances in cancer treatment in the last thirty years have contributed to the growing number of survivors. In face of this progress, especially in cases of childhood cancer survivors, from the repercussions of the entire process, since diagnosis to the end of treatment, and the need of follow-up after cure, a better understanding of childhood cancer survivors experience is necessary. Objective: The research objective was to understand the adolescent`s cancer survivor experience. Methods: This was a qualitative approach study which used the Symbolic Interactionism as theoretical framework and the Thematic Analysis as a methodological framework. The data were obtained by field observation, documentary analysis, the genogram and ecomap constructions and the interview using the Original Romance method, which allowed the researcher to understand the individual´s subjective perception about his/her history. Fourteen adolescents cancer survivors attending in an outpatient clinic in São Paulo, SP, Brazil, joined the study. Results: The data comparative analysis allowed to identify four themes: "Growing in the hospital"; "Transiting from disease to cure"; "Living with the cancer legacy" and "Being grateful to be alive". Considerations: The transition from illness to cure proved to be full of insecurity, difficulty, and challenges. The will to live allows the adolescent to seek meaning to his own life, as well as the ability to adapt to complex transformations in lifefollowing the healing from a traumatic disease like cancer. After the illness, survivors acquire new values and life priorities; past experience has brought more value to life, in addition to early maturity and a sense of gratitude to God, to the mother and to others who faced this trajectory during the treatment.
