This review summarizes the current knowledge on the essential-oil analysis of
the forty plant species belonging to the genus Bupleurum, ten of which are
annual, and thirty are perennial. The analysis covers the chemical
composition of essential oils isolated from various plant organs, oil
yields, and the percentage of identified components. The main constituents
of the essential oils are outlined, and the structures of the most prevalent
monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, phenylpropanoids, aldehydes, alcohols, esters,
etc., are given. Tables comparing the chemical composition are included for
essential oils that underwent multiple analyses.
