Do insulation products of man‐made vitreous fibres still cause skin discomfort?

Abstract: BackgroundMan-made vitreous fibres (MMVFs) are used in products for insulation and as reinforcement in materials. Contamination of the skin may arise through direct or indirect contact, and from the deposition of airborne fibres. The scientific basis regarding the effects on skin of MMVFs dates from 1970–1980.ObjectivesTo investigate whether currently used insulation MMVF products still cause skin discomfort.MethodsFocus group interviews and structured interviews were performed among workers engaged in insulat… Show more

“…If they are to be deployed, they should only be used in low flow environments to prevent physical degradation or loss of material, as we found these materials disintegrated when deployed in high wastewater flows. In addition, the manual handling of glass wool is also problematic from a human exposure perspective [76,77], as it is easily broken down and can become embedded into the user's skin. We also noted that other passive samplers, such as NanoCeram and ZetaPlus filters were ineffectual or performed poorly relative to their high cost.…”

“…Irritation from man‐made vitreous fibers (MMVFs) has also been seen in the occupational setting as a cause of skin irritation . MMVFs (including glass fibers, rock wool, or slag wool) are fibrous, inorganic silicates that are made from glass and other minerals .…”

“…8 Irritation from man-made vitreous fibers (MMVFs) has also been seen in the occupational setting as a cause of skin irritation. 4,[12][13][14] MMVFs (including glass fibers, rock wool, or slag wool) are fibrous, inorganic silicates that are made from glass and other minerals. 15 According to the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases, 20% of all occupational dermatoses in insulation workers were caused by irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) related to MMVP exposure.…”

“…Handling textiles made of mineral wools like rock wool is directly related with some leakage of those fibers. Furthermore, contact dermatitis can be produced by the contamination of the skin by direct, indirect contact, or deposition of airborne fibers [3].…”
