Do Intubation Devices Affect Middle Ear Pressure Dynamics?

Abstract: Our study aimed to investigate the effects of different intubation devices on middle ear pressure (MEP) dynamics by evaluating MEP during stages of anesthesia. Sixty-one consecutive patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: the classical endotracheal intubation group and the Baska Mask (a new laryngeal mask [LMA]) group. All patients received the same anesthesia protocol. The right and left MEP values of the patients were measured and recorded preoperatively, during the induction of anesthesia, … Show more

“…Due to this increase, it may cause complications such as vomiting, hearing loss, otalgia, hemotympanum and middle ear inflammation (Nader et al, 2004;Carmichael and Boyev, 2016). In many studies, including our previous study, the use of Baska Mask ® causes less change in the middle ear pressure compared to standard intubation (Degerli et al, 2013;Torun et al, 2019). Therefore, the occurrence of possible complications will decrease.…”

“…Compared to endotracheal intubation, FLMAs have little effect on middle ear pressure. 7 , 8 These advantages make anesthesiologists prefer FLMAs during otologic surgery. In addition, since FLMAs can reduce the response to upper airway stimulation, they can be used as an airway device during surgery requiring facial nerve monitoring without the use of muscle relaxants.…”
