Do life events lead to enduring changes in adult attachment styles? A naturalistic longitudinal investigation.

Abstract: Research has shown that a variety of life events are associated with changes in adult attachment styles. What is unknown, however, is the extent to which those changes are transient or enduring. To investigate this issue, we followed a sample of over 4,000 people in a multiwave longitudinal study in which people naturalistically experienced a variety of life events (e.g., starting new relationships, changing jobs, average n across events ϭ 392). This allowed us to examine people's attachment trajectories befor… Show more

“…Overall, this study substantiates that the quality of parental bonding in childhood may affect the expectations on close relationships in adulthood [ 71 , 72 , 73 ]. In support of meaningful researches, this work proposes that target genetic predispositions (e.g., 5-HTTLPR) and the quality of familiar environment (e.g., parental bonding) may represent postnatal longitudinal predictors of typical and atypical social development [ 74 ].…”

“…Consequently, the partners of people high in attachment anxiety also report lower satisfaction and commitment 5,17,31,32 . The greater conflict and reduced partner commitment arising from the destructive responses of people high in attachment anxiety, in turn, perpetuate fears of abandonment and therefore sustain attachment anxiety 25,33,34 . Attachment avoidance.…”
