Do longer sequences improve the accuracy of identification of forensically important Calliphoridae species?

Abstract: Species identification is a crucial step in forensic entomology. In several cases the calculation of the larval age allows the estimation of the minimum Post-Mortem Interval (mPMI). A correct identification of the species is the first step for a correct mPMI estimation. To overcome the difficulties due to the morphological identification especially of the immature stages, a molecular approach can be applied. However, difficulties in separation of closely related species are still an unsolved problem. Sequences… Show more

“…Low Na concentration in soil is considered beneficial for the growth and development of many plants [ 52 ]. Plants have different salt tolerance levels, and high concentration of Na in the soil can result in low productivity of crops and also lead to sodium dispersion making agricultural soils unsuitable for growing crops [ 30 ]. If the concentration of Na in an agricultural soil is greater than 2 cmol c kg −1 , then it is on the very high level.…”

“…Molecular approaches have been developed to meet this scientist necessity. Gene database, because of the lack of information or the incorrectness of the uploaded information, do not allow yet an identification of all the taxa recognised of forensic interest (Bortolini et al 2018;Garg et al 2019). Therefore, the support of the morphological identification approach remains uncontested.…”

“…Sequencing reactions were carried out by Eurofins Operon MWG-Ebersberg, Germany. The obtained FASTA sequences were compared with GenBank DNA sequences using BLAST-n® (Altschul, Gish, Miller, Myers, & Lipman, 1990) and with home-produced sequences as reported in Bortolini, Giordani, Tuccia, Maistrello, and Vanin (2018).…”
